Streaming in July 2023: Tarla, The Trial and Blind serve some sizzling entertainment

The real life story of India’s kitchen queen Tarla Dalal, Kajol stepping in as the desi ‘good wife’ and Sonam Kapoor launching on a vengeful quest — the month of July offers enough action on your small screens to rustle up a sizzling plate of pakodas and a hot cup of tea and settle in front of the telly. If June came with new seasons of many of your favourite shows, July seems to be high on thrills as they offer a perfect mix of drama, crime, romance and mystery. Disney Plus Hotstar is all set to present the Indian adaptation of the courtroom drama The Good Wife with Kajol in the lead. If you are interested in knowing the chef Tarla Dalal up close and personal, there is ZEE5 biopic on her titled Tarla. For the fans of the horror genre, Adhura on Amazon Prime Video might be a good pick.

The romantic-comedy Ishq Next Door celebrates true love. It stars Natasha Bhardwaj, Abhay Mahajan, Mrinal Dutt and YouTube sensation Purav Jha. The story revolves around a simple man named Dev who has the responsibility of his mother and his younger brother. But his life changes with the entry of Meher Kaur Sikka, a young and vivacious girl.

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Krishna Marimuthu, and Swathi Raghuraaman, the Tamil series stars Lakshmi, Madhoo, and Santhy in the lead roles. It is a family drama that revolves around three women from the same family. They take a road trip together to get some respite from their mundane daily lives. During their journey, they rediscover themselves and reignite their zest for life. The eight-episode show will start streaming on July 4.

Tarla is a biopic of food writer and celebrity home chef Tarla Dalal. Actor Huma Qureshi plays the titular role in the film, which is written by Gautam Ved and Piyush Gupta, who is also the director of the film. It is co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Nitesh Tiwari and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. Actor Sharib Hashmi portrays the role of Tarla’s husband, Nalin. Besides focussing on her life as a professional cook, the film also explores her life as a mother and a wife.

Adhura: Amazon Prime Video

Adhura, starring Ishwak Singh, Poojan Chhabra, Rijul Ray, Zoa Morani, Sahil Salathia and Aru Krishansh Verma as high school friends, is a horror drama, a rarity in the Indian OTT space. The show also stars Rasika Dugal, Shrenik Arora and Rahul Dev in pivotal roles. The show is set in a haunted boarding school where a young boy gets possessed by the spirit of a dead student. The reunion of the class of 2007 triggers supernatural events. Adhura is is produced by Nikkhil Advani’s Emmay Entertainment and directed by Ananya Banerjee and Gauravv K Chawla.

Blind: Jio Cinemas

Shome Makhija’s is a remake of a Korean crime thriller. It stars Sonam Kapoor as a visually impaired woman and Purab Kohli as a serial killer. Vinay Pathak, Lillete Dubey and Shubham Saraf also feature in the movie. The synopsis of Blind reads: “A captivating tale that unfolds a woman’s grit to defy all odds, Blind is a story of a visually impaired resilient woman (played by Sonam) who becomes a key witness to a crime. In her efforts to trace the unusual turn of events and give testimony about the incident, she is forced to confront the killer on her own. Purab Kohli as the menacing antagonist delivers a powerful performance in this riveting tale of secrets and suspense, with an intriguing cast that adds exciting layers to the story.”

College Romance Season 4: Sony LIV

The final season of College Romance is all set to stream on SonyLIV from July 14. It will showcase how the gang of friends will take the journey into the real world after a joyful time at college. Directed by Ashutosh Pankaj, the show features Gagan Arora, Apoorva Arora, Keshav Sadhna, Shreya Mehta, Nupur Nagpal, Jahnvi Rawat, and Eklavey Kashyap.

The Trial: Disney Plus Hotstar

The courtroom drama The Trial is the Indian adaptation of The Good Wife, which starred Julianna Margulies in the lead role. The Indian version of the show is headlined by Kajol and also stars actors Jisshu Sengupta, Sheeba Chaddha, Kubbra Sait, and Alyy Khan among others. Kajol plays Noyonika Sengupta, a housewife and a lawyer who re-enters the courtroom when her husband’s public scandal lands him in prison.

Maya Bazaar for Sale: ZEE5
Streaming on: July 14
A satirical drama revolving around families in a premium gated community, the Telugu show Maya Bazaar For Sale will stream on ZEE5. The series features an ensemble cast of Navdeep Pallapolu, Eesha Rebba, Naresh Vijaya Krishna, Hari Teja, Jhansi Laxmi, Meiyang Chang, Sunaina and Kota Srinivas Rao among others. The show is centered around the Pastry’s, Gandhi’s, the Hippies, the Bachelors and a couple who move into premium villas in a gated community called ‘Maya Bazaar’. But their lives go for a toss when the construction is announced illegal by the government. The series is developed in association with actor Rana Daggubati‘s production banner Spirit Media.

DP 2: Netflix
Streaming on: July 28
The second season of the Korean military drama series DP, starring popular actors Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo-hwan is a fast-paced thriller. It revolves around Private An Jun-ho (Jung) and Corporal Han Ho-yeol (Koo) who return to capture army deserters and “bring them back, safe and sound”. The series will also see Kim Sung-kyun and Son Suk-ku reprise their roles of Sergeant First Class Park Beom-gu and Captain Im Ji-sub, respectively. The first season of DP received critical acclaim for its screenplay and performance.
