The highly anticipated Hollywood sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was released in India on October 2, which was a national holiday on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. This proved to be a wise decision, as its collections since then have taken a tumble.
According to industry tracking website Sacnilk, the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-starrer opened with Rs 5.15 crore on day one. However, the film has seen a bit of a downward trend the last two days, as it earned under Rs 2 crore. On Thursday, the film earned Rs 1.35 crore, and according to early trends, it raked in Rs 1.25 crore on Friday. The nett total of Joker: Folie a Deux stands at Rs 7.75 crore.
In terms of occupancy, on Friday, the afternoon shows saw the highest turnouts, with 8.66% occupancy. Chennai led the way with 14% occupancy across 98 screenings. In Mumbai, 7.67% occupancy was observed for 413 shows, whereas in Delhi and NCR, the occupancy stood at 5.33% for 524 shows.
Globally, Joker 2 was released in Korea on October 1 and grossed $1.3 million on its opening day. The film hit US theaters on October 4, with makers aiming for $140 million globally on its debut weekend. Joker 2 premiered at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where it received a thunderous 12-minute standing ovation. This echoes the 2019 victory of the original Joker, which won the festival’s top prize.

The film’s performance in India will be closely watched, especially considering its predecessor’s massive success. But the film’s critical reception is concerning; Joker 2’s Rotten Tomatoes score is currently lingering in the 30s. The Indian Express’ Shalini Langar gave the film a three star rating and wrote, “Joaquin Phoenix is doing more of what he did last time, and the proficient actor knows how to do this kind of crazy well. However, if Joker 2 has any of the tenuous, arresting vitality of the Batman films, it is courtesy Gaga.”
Directed by Todd Phillips and distributed by Warner Bros., Joker: Folie a Deux boasts an impressive cast, including Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. As the weekend unfolds, it remains to be seen if Joker 2 can regain momentum and attract more viewers.
